Man Pulls Off Huge Shoplifting Scheme, Gets the Surprise of His Life

A routine call about a suspicious vehicle at a Menards store in La Crosse, Wisconsin, quickly became a chase and arrest. A simple shoplifting attempt escalated when a suspect tried to flee with over $1,100 stolen goods. Officers acted fast, but not without some unexpected twists along the way.

In March 2024, officers from the La Crosse Police Department responded to a Menards store following a call from security regarding a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. The car had tape covering its license plate and brand emblems, raising concerns. Security also observed one person waiting inside the vehicle while the other, later identified as 40-year-old James, was inside shopping.

James, who had a criminal history dating back to 2000, was seen loading his cart with over $1,100 worth of tools, including a chainsaw and a machete. Instead of paying, he attempted to flee, sprinting out of the store with security in pursuit. Officers quickly intercepted him, and despite his repeated falls during the chase, he continued resisting until he was taken into custody.

During the arrest, a security officer alerted police that the woman in the parked car was attempting to flee the scene. Officers tried to track her down, but she managed to escape. Meanwhile, James was searched, revealing additional items hidden in his clothing. Despite his claims of misunderstanding, he was taken into custody and now faces multiple charges.

Final words: Legal note

Shoplifting may seem like a minor offense, but when combined with prior convictions and an attempt to evade law enforcement, it can lead to serious legal consequences. The La Crosse Police Department swiftly apprehended James and prevented further criminal activity. Cases like these serve as a reminder that store security and law enforcement work closely together to deter theft and ensure public safety.
